  • Time for new weekly wins! What's your win this week?

My weekly wins:

– I created my first ever Mac App (sort of – fixed and modified one I found on Github to suit my own needs)
– I finally realised I was in too many categories on Upwork, apparently greatly watering down my search appearances. Now seeing almost daily profile viewing activity, including one direct contact.
– Recorded some demo vids for my profile & wrote scripts for several more. Needed to do this for a long while.
– Had Connects returned twice this week from Upwork due to naughty clients, plus one bug fix. Upwork Support have been pretty good (my first time raising tickets since the forum was closed).

Robin Congratulations on your wins! Could you expand upon the second point of being in too many categories? My understanding was the more categories you are in, the more searches that you would appear in? Also, what exactly do you mean by categories? Like specialized profiles and/or the skills listed in the profiles? I'm so curious!

JessicaKay My understanding was the more categories you are in, the more searches that you would appear in

There's an Upwork Help Page which talks about this – https://support.upwork.com/hc/en-us/articles/360024526754-Profile-categories-and-skills

From that page: “Picking the right categories means you're more likely to get invited to jobs that align with your strengths. It also makes it easier for you to stand out when clients are browsing through freelancer profiles.”

I'm interpreting somewhat here, along with previous posts I'd read on the forum which talk about niching down with your profile (which is how I started, with much greater success… though I recognise the platform has changed, too), that this means being only in the fewest no. of categories (or just 1) directly related to your main skill area will place you higher in search than if you're spread over numerous categories (because how does the algorithm know which of your categories you consider to be your best skills? Well maybe your profile content… but then what is the function of being in other categories if the algo is going to override?).

Anyway that was my theory on reading this page in combination with others' views, and early results are positive.

JessicaKay Also, what exactly do you mean by categories? Like specialized profiles and/or the skills listed in the profiles?

See page above. In your Upwork Account –> Profile Settings, you see 'Categories' towards the bottom of the page. It's these, where you can pick skills within those, which places you in their associated top-level categories.

I have broadened in terms of deep skills, and had also wanted to do coaching (and did pick some of that up), so had picked a lot of skill areas, placing me in quite a few top-level categories. My feeling (note: I'm not an Upwork mega-success story) is that this had been harming my profile's performance in Talent Search.

I did also create two specialized profiles, and my feeling is that doing this, in conjunction with broadening my skill/category selections, has been a serious act of self-harm on the platform. Further time will tell.

What??? I always read on the forums to maximize your use of those 10 slots! In fact once in a while when results were slumping I'd see someone recommending to see if any had been accidentally removed and get 'em back in!

Okay, verrrrry gently, I'm going to take a few out right now & see what the next week brings.

P.S. I feel like I've gotten more insights out of this new forum in a few weeks than I did from the old one in a couple of years.

Kelly_E Yes, definitely go very gently I'd suggest with these kinds of profile changes!

I'm really just trying to figure out what works and what doesn't work. Early results were an uptick from zero profile views to some most days, but it's only been a week.

I created a thread for sharing tips & experiences with the possibility of diagnosing and picking out patterns over time if others post their results/experiences.

Thread is here: https://freelancer.forum/public/d/146-tips-optimise-your-upwork-profile, and has been helpfully pinned on the forum.

Good luck! Would like to know if you see any results.

Robin Thank you for sharing your insights! The truth is that for any algo on any platform, we never really 100% know how it works, right? It's good to tweak and experiment to see how to optimize it for ourselves. Good call with making the new thread! I'll keep following over there!
