What do you do for a living?

My job is to help create topics in Community, but one day I hope to grow up and be a sysop. What about you, what do you do?

I am a mechanical engineer, but I have been copyediting for the last eleven years.

I studied at an elite residential school run by Irish Christian Brothers.

Thereafter, I did mechanical engineering from IIT Kharagpur, the same college as Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet and Google.

I also have a master’s degree in engineering and another in mathematics from SIUC, USA.

I have experience in teaching, administration, systems analysis, software development, CADD, and copyediting.

Spent much of my career in various customer experience roles.

Decade at Geek Squad, got to help launch their Geek Squad Online Support team, launched external partnerships that sold Geek Squad services, and spent some time running operations on the Best Buy API team, as well as running the BestBuy eBay store.
4 years at Stratsys (3D Printing company) overseeing the customer support team.
-4 years at Anaplan building out their Community
3.5 years at Upwork building up (and closing down) their community
Currently Director of CS Technology and Innovation

On the side, I apparently launch forums for fun 🤷‍♂️ 😃

Spent 6 years working for GeekSquad/Samsung in the UK.
Supporting engineers figure out the most efficient ways to fix things.
Creating internal communities for them to collaborate and have peer-to-peer support.

Then another 5 years at Sony, overseeing the manufacture of broadcast equipment but also doing some cool stuff like dealing with brexit, helping launch a camera-loan business and designing a new internal repair management system.

Then during COVID I moved into Professional Communities full time, spent the last few years at Anaplan and Upwork - basically following Stan from job to job where we would use data to deliver change initiatives that solve complex customer challenges. Fluff words that basically means - we built cool communities that helped people quite often with one hand tied behind out backs.

Now I'm feeling sorry for myself while I look for something new.

I'm a technical content writer who has a few projects going on right now. Mostly I write standard operating procedures for various industries and construction-related articles (think steel and insulation--exciting, I know!).

I also create and sell printable educational resources. My computer and phone make a "cha-ching" sound every time I sell a resource and it brings me more joy that it probably should. But it's the little things in life, right?

I'm an audiobook narrator/producer, and voice actor. I'm also an actor with an IMDB page, and podcaster with a YouTube channel. I help authors make audiobooks, and collaborate with writers to tell funny stories about life and befuddlement.

Past careers: Retail, residential real estate agent in Illinois and Louisiana, area executive for March of Dimes and American Cancer Society, physician headhunter, background actor in films and TV. Went back to school in my 40's and got a paralegal certificate. I'm now a paralegal with 30+ years experience as such, freelancing for the past 10 years and specializing in medical record chronological summaries. And still available for work as background actor, which doesn't pay much but is so much fun!

Whew. That's exhausting.

Translator but in the past I have managed remote teams (Customer Service and Data Processing) and even further back I was in International Sales and Sales Management.

I burnt out and left the corporate world and tried different things for a few years before getting into freelancing.
